this year was spent making my new album so i was listening to that non stop and working on that.
the only thing i really listened to in between was older music like godflesh, leonard cohen, burial… all over the place.
i honestly didn’t listen to much music that was new outside of what my friends sent me. but notable artists would be author & punisher, crowhurst, cervello elettronico… that and the new tribe called quest ;)
Q1.
What was the best music pieces for you this year?
again, i was locked away in the studio or traveling - and as far as new music goes i’m very out of the loop. i listen to a lot of drones and noise / metal stuff. i think crowhurst ‘II’ is really great. that came out this year. the new crowbar is good. i’ve heard my new album about 500 thousand times so i would hope that it sounds ok to me, at least i hope so at this point! i’ve become a bit detached from it to be honest. now that it’s over i can catch up on all the stuff i’ve been missing out on!
Q2.
What was the best thing about Work of art such as movies, books, TV shows/Documentary,etc, you saw this year?
books, last thing i read was a leonard cohen biography that i got in LA a few months before he passed away. i don’t really watch much tv / movies / or documentaries as most things i see are just quick clips on the internet. half of the year was spent driving in vans and i would watch random things on netflix at night but 20 minutes in i would fall asleep from being tired ;) i did watch stranger things, i loved that and the score / soundtrack!
Q3.
What was the most impressive experience you experienced this year?
personally i would say visiting yosemite national park in california. it was right at the end of writing the album and right after i drove up the coast of california to portland. i had time to clear my head and get away from all the bullshit in LA and i wanted to take it easy for a bit. it was really amazing to be surrounded by such beautiful nature & wildlife. i felt alive & full of energy again (for a minute anyway).
regarding music the most impressive thing to me was das bunker 20th anniversary gig. it was a festival in los angeles that was 3 days long and a lot of great artists played (author&punisher, kanga, baseck, marching dynamics). tons of others. i was really fortunate to play there w/ all those great artists. also it was the last big trip of one of my best friends who passed away a few weeks ago. so i’m really glad he was able to come hang out for a while and come see some of his favorite bands one last time.
Q4.
How was this year for you?
fucking stressful! but i’m glad the album is out. i had a lot of loss this year, especially towards the end. but i’m the kind of person that needs to stay busy in order to move forward, and no matter what try to find a positive outlook amidst all the chaos and negativity. the world seems like a bubble about to burst at any moment if you look online for more than 5 minutes. everyone’s so uptight and frustrated. a lot of people going through some really hard shit right now. i guess in the end - i’m hopeful. i know that things can turn around and i think pushing positivity to everyone (even if they are against you) is very important. especially these days.
Q5.
What’s your new year’s resolutions?
stop worrying so much and keep going. make good music and keep doing what i love to do.
